THE QUEEN OF COCYTUS
Gallery: Wound and Ornament · Figurative Neo-expressionism · Author: Adrian Thomas
In Cocytus, desire does not die. It remains intact beneath the ice.
-
Description:
The Queen of Cocytus belongs to SANTOGrail's Wound and Ornament wing, where beauty is presented pierced by tension, desire, luxury, damage, and rupture.
The artwork shows an adult woman seated in a very close-up, with a sovereign presence, transparencies, dark jewelry, and a cigarette held with a gesture of absolute calm. In front of her—or behind her scenic dominion—a circular mirror appears where two men try to escape, trapped in a surface that seems like crystal, ice, and condemnation all at once.
The piece symbolically references the frozen lake of Cocytus, Dante's Circle IX territory, associated with betrayal. But Santograil does not represent it literally. It transforms it into a scene of dark eroticism, feminine power, and psychological condemnation. Betrayal is not shown as a scream or fire: it is shown as cold confinement, as immobilized desire, as a reflection that no longer offers freedom.

As a curatorial criterion, we suggest:
- professional quality fine art paper or artistic canvas
- pigmented inks
- plain frames in matte black, natural wood, or off-white
- LED lighting, no direct sunlight
- a presentation where the artwork can visually breathe
For works printed on paper, framing with acrylic or glass with UV protection and adequate separation between the artwork and the protective surface is suggested.
The final appreciation will depend on the medium, the laboratory, the lighting, and the exhibition space.
