THE ASCENSION
Gallery: Wound and Ornament · Contemporary Neo-expressionism · Author: Adrian Thomas
They were not ascending to another floor. They were ascending to what they could no longer deny.
-
Description:
The Ascension belongs to the Wound and Ornament wing, where the image is constructed from matter, gesture, emotional tension, and the imperfect beauty of the stroke.
The work shows a couple on an indoor staircase, caught in an instant of intense desire. The scene is not presented as a simple intimate encounter, but as a symbolic transition: bodies ascend, but also cross an emotional, physical, and psychological threshold.
The visual language responds to an intimate figurative neo-expressionism. The visible brushwork, the impasto, the shadow areas, the texture of the walls, and the presence of dark red on the steps turn the architecture into an extension of desire. The staircase is not a background: it is structure, tension, and destiny.
The power of the work lies in its pictorial honesty. It does not soften the body or turn it into an ornament. It presents it as presence, impulse, and confession. The warm light, the skin, the gesture, and the enclosed space create a scene where the intimate acquires monumental weight.
The Ascension is an Open Edition work for collectors looking for a direct, sensual, and expressive piece: an image where desire is not explained, it simply ascends.

SANTOGrail recommends this artwork for exhibition formats up to 60 × 80 cm, with professional printing on fine art paper or artistic canvas.
As a curatorial criterion, we suggest:
- professional quality fine art paper or artistic canvas
- pigmented inks
- simple frames in matte black, natural wood or off-white
- LED lighting, no direct sunlight
- a presentation where the artwork can visually breathe
For works printed on paper, framing with acrylic or UV-protected glass is suggested, with adequate separation between the artwork and the protective surface.
The final appreciation will depend on the medium, the lab, the lighting, and the exhibition space.
